Neighbourhood
Just a short journey from the mainland, the Isle of Bute is one of Scotland’s most accessible islands and it offers far more than its compact size suggests. Though only 15 miles long and 5 miles wide, Bute is rich in history, culture, wildlife, arts, and music, making it a perfect destination for visitors of all ages. At the heart of the island lies Rothesay, the main town and arrival point for most visitors. Bustling with life during the day, Rothesay offers a relaxed, peaceful charm in the evenings after the last ferry departs. The town is home to a variety of cafés, bars, restaurants, takeaways, and of course, ice cream shops, all catering to both locals and tourists alike. The island boasts a traditional Victorian charm, with beautiful period architecture lining its streets. Many of these historic buildings have seen thoughtful restoration in recent years, adding to the island’s unique character and appeal. A highlight of the shoreline is the striking Isle of Bute Discovery Centre, an iconic 1920s circular building made of cast iron and glass. Lovingly refurbished, it now features a cinema, theatre, and interactive exhibits, celebrating the very best of Bute’s heritage and creativity. History lovers will enjoy a visit to Rothesay Castle, complete with restored dungeons, thick stone walls, and an impressive great hall. Just a short stroll away, the Bute Museum offers further insight into the island’s fascinating past. No trip to Bute would be complete without exploring Mount Stuart House, a spectacular neo-Gothic mansion set amidst breathtaking gardens. It’s an unmissable stop during your stay, offering a glimpse into the grandeur and elegance of Bute’s historic legacy.
Transit
Reaching the Isle of Bute is simple and stress-free. The island is well-connected via a regular ferry service from Wemyss Bay on the Clyde coast. Wemyss Bay also has a railway station with frequent trains to and from Glasgow, making it a seamless journey whether you’re travelling by car or as a foot passenger. The CalMac ferry takes around 35 minutes and offers a comfortable crossing with stunning coastal views. It accommodates both vehicles and foot passengers, and docks right in the heart of Rothesay, Bute’s main town. Once you arrive, getting around is easy. Rothesay is very walkable, and taxis are readily available just outside the ferry terminal. The island is also served by a reliable public bus network, making it convenient to explore Bute without a car. For those who enjoy a more active pace, cycling is a popular and rewarding way to see the island’s beautiful scenery.

Absolutely perfect - will definitely stay again and would recommend to any family/feiendsAmazing location, great communication with the host - apartment was beautifully renovated and had everything we needed.Only a tiny thing - as we were trying to be respectful to the neighbours it would have been good to have some door stops to avoid the internal doors banging.

Beautifully decorated, spacious and bright flat in central location. Would use again if a grab rail is put up in the shower.

Good range of equipment - ie cooking utensils, cleaning products Inc bin bags etc Carpets were of a great quality, comfortable seating areas. Lovely shower. Spacious and modern. The beds were great, but personally the pillows were too firm. The alarm in the main door on the final night keeps sounding throughout the night with 'low battery, please replace', this was really loud and meant sleep was intermittent. It was a shame not to be able to use the door next to the apartment, we have to go further along the road. A small area for placing make up/jewellery in the bedroom would have been great. We had to use the window sill. Also a small mirror .....

Central location, great space, super quiet.Central location, quiet & roomy with great facilities.Advertised as wheelchair accessible the property lacked hand rails for a physically disabled individual in the bathroom but…It’s almost an unfair point. It’s not advertised as an ‘accommodation for disabled persons’. It was excellent & we coped fine. I’d like to mention that the host provided excellent information prior to our visit.

The apartment was in an excellent location! Very spacious and beautiful. Right opposite the castle. Alan was a great host and easy to contact. I only gave 3 stars for value for money though, as I would expect a bit better for £395 for 2 nights. For example, the doors inside the apartment were really squeaky and noisy, no bin in the bathroom, the sheets on the main bed were pilling and looked awful, no cutlery drainer in the kitchen (and an awful shabby, peeling frypan). I do understand it's a recent renovation (we were probably only the second people to stay here) so no doubt that Alan will sort out these minor things : )
