Neighbourhood

Dunallan has a working farm behind, the Alpacas are at the bottom of the road. Just a short journey from the mainland, the Isle of Bute is one of Scotland’s most accessible islands and it offers far more than its compact size suggests. Though only 15 miles long and 5 miles wide, Bute is rich in history, culture, wildlife, arts, and music, making it a perfect destination for visitors of all ages. At the heart of the island lies Rothesay, the main town and arrival point for most visitors. Bustling with life during the day, Rothesay offers a relaxed, peaceful charm in the evenings after the last ferry departs. The town is home to a variety of cafés, bars, restaurants, takeaways, and of course, ice cream shops, all catering to both locals and tourists alike. The island boasts a traditional Victorian charm, with beautiful period architecture lining its streets. Many of these historic buildings have seen thoughtful restoration in recent years, adding to the island’s unique character and appeal. A highlight of the shoreline is the striking Isle of Bute Discovery Centre, an iconic 1920s circular building made of cast iron and glass. Lovingly refurbished, it now features a cinema, theatre, and interactive exhibits, celebrating the very best of Bute’s heritage and creativity. History lovers will enjoy a visit to Rothesay Castle, complete with restored dungeons, thick stone walls, and an impressive great hall. Just a short stroll away, the Bute Museum offers further insight into the island’s fascinating past. No trip to Bute would be complete without exploring Mount Stuart House, a spectacular neo-Gothic mansion set amidst breathtaking gardens. It’s an unmissable stop during your stay, offering a glimpse into the grandeur and elegance of Bute’s historic legacy.

Transit

Reaching the Isle of Bute is simple and stress-free. The island is well-connected via a regular ferry service from Wemyss Bay on the Clyde coast. Wemyss Bay also has a railway station with frequent trains to and from Glasgow, making it a seamless journey whether you’re travelling by car or as a foot passenger. The CalMac ferry takes around 35 minutes and offers a comfortable crossing with stunning coastal views. It accommodates both vehicles and foot passengers, and docks right in the heart of Rothesay, Bute’s main town. Once you arrive, getting around is easy. Rothesay is very walkable, and taxis are readily available just outside the ferry terminal. The island is also served by a reliable public bus network, making it convenient to explore Bute without a car. For those who enjoy a more active pace, cycling is a popular and rewarding way to see the island’s beautiful scenery.

Me and my family loved staying at Alan’s Lovley farm cottage, beautiful location and a beautiful home, was worth the price if you were staying for a few nights but due to last minute plans we only stayed one night but would recommend to other people

The apartment next to the cottage was lovely - we did initially believe it was the cottage we were staying in. Hot tub was great (which was the main feature but additional charge of £100) with an enclosed area for our dog. The security key box didn’t work when checking in but the owners came from the cottage and confirmed that it hadn’t been working for some time. It is in the middle of nowhere but a short taxi ride to the town (10mins) and the owner told us about Kingarth hotel (20min taxi - £25 each way) where we really enjoyed the food. Stairs weren’t level and so if you have difficulty, may be something to consider. We got the Ferry over (2 adult in a car - approx £24 each way ) from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay. We enjoyed our stay overall, thank you

What a stunning location! The Isle of Bute offers incredible scenery and endless hikes. We arrived to celebrate NYE. To get onto the isle there’s an hourly ferry service, it’s best to arrive 30-40 minutes before the ferry’s departure as it can get full. You can buy a ticket on arrival to the ferry port. The Airbnb was easy to find and check in was a breeze. The host showed us the facilities and the hot tub. They also left us some bubbles for our NYE celebration. The Airbnb was also decorated with Christmas decor and a tree which I thought was a lovely touch. It’s a fully working Airbnb with some kitchen amenities, laundry, dishwasher and utensils. Loved the shower, it’s spacious and has good pressure. There’s a friendly dog onsite called Cooper who you may see wondering around and he loves a pet. The island was fairly shut down for NYE, but the coop, pubs and the Chinese were open. Everywhere on the island was easy to drive to and the hikes were well signed posted.

Spent a week at Dunallan Farm Cottage and couldn’t have been happier. The space was stylish, quiet, and well-equipped for both work and rest. Shops and cafes were just around the corner, which made it so convenient. It was one of the most comfortable stays I’ve had recently.
